Charlie Brown
(otherwise known as CB)
Meet CB. This poor dog was named Charlie Brown, because I had a cat named Snoopy at the time. Never was a dog named more accurate to his personality. No matter how hard CB tried, he never seemed to do ANYTHING right. CB was my very first dog, and I learned a great deal from him.

Poor CB. So what kind of dog do you think he is? Well, he's 1/2 Pointer, and 1/2 Norwegian Buhund (yes, that IS a breed). His mother was a beautiful red color, with a full "northern spitz" look. The breed is rare in America, or was at the time he was born. How this man came to have her, I can't tell you. But poor CB came out with white body, black head, white stripe, pointer ears, except that one stood up like his mothers. He also ended up with severe hip dysplasia. He only lived to 2 1/2 years, but those were GREAT years for him.

Besides being a total clown, CB loved having his picture taken. Isn't this just the pose of a lifetime? Most of his life, I lived in Alabama, where his vet, Dr. VanHooser, took excellent care of him. This was the only dog that ever loved going to see his "Doctor". He would drag me into the vet, as his doctor and he had a special relationship. He'd bark at the top of his lungs, and Doc VanHooser would act as if he understood every "word". It was the only time CB was allowed to bark unrestrained, and let me tell ya, he loved it! Once CB was stung by a wasp, and as the vet examined him, it was obvious it was terribly painful. When it was over, CB's feelings were as hurt as his jaw, and he huddled into the corner. Dr. VanHooser got down on his hands and knees and repaired their relationship by apologizing. We knew when CB accepted the apology when he shook hands, always our "your forgiven" response. Friends once again!

Meet Rascal, CB's constant companion. CB had horrible hip dysplasia, and had to have two surgeries. During those, Rascal took care of CB like he was his child. He guarded him against other dogs, and stuck by his side during his recovery. Wasn't he cute?

Just a small example of the love between these two. Isn't that cute?
When I got married, CB came with the package. :) He had never had a "man in the house" before, and my husband had not had a dog before. I always wish I had caught their relationship on film. My husband likes to lay on his stomach on the couch to watch tv. When I came into the room, hubby was watching TV like normal. Laying on his back, with his head on my husband's shoulder, was CB. What a sweet site it was!
We lost Rascal when he managed to get into a field with a pack of dogs. He was one of those cats that refused to believe he could be beaten. CB, however, we had to put down at 2 1/2 years of age. He had had both hips operated on, but never recovered. Then he came down with heartworms on top of it. He was in so much pain, we just couldn't bear to watch it anymore, so we let him go. But you and I know, he's much happier now.
